Went to a high end kitchen showroom in Portland and noticed all the cabinets had soft close hardware but zero drawer dividers

I was walking through a place called Northwest Kitchen Studio and every single piece was Blumotion soft close, full extension slides. Beautiful stuff. But not one drawer had any dividers inside. No cutlery trays, no spice racks built in, nothing. Felt like they spent all the money on the glides and forgot people actually put stuff in those drawers. Isn't the whole point of custom cabinets to make the inside work as good as the outside? Has anyone else noticed this trend or is it just me?

Serious question about using water-based polyurethane on trim work

Last week I did a full kitchen trim job in a house near downtown Columbus, and I used water-based poly like everyone says to. Over 3 days I did 4 coats and it still feels tacky in the humidity. I used to do oil-based stuff back in 2021 and never had this problem, but I switched because everyone online acted like water-based was the only way to go. Has anyone else had this issue or did I just pick a bad brand?

Found a workaround for stubborn glue squeeze-out on plywood edges

Last week I was building a set of kitchen cabs for a client in Portland and the glue was oozing everywhere on the prefinished birch. I tried wiping it with a damp rag but it smeared worse. I bought this big set of carbide router bits off a random website last month for my CNC setup in the shop. Told myself it was a steal at $600 compared to buying them one by one from a known brand. Well, the first bit snapped on a simple plywood cut after like 10 minutes. Tried another one and it chipped right away on some maple. So yeah, I basically lit $600 on fire and now I'm back to buying Amana bits individually. Has anyone else had bad luck with those bulk bit packs from no-name suppliers?

I was building a client's kitchen in Arlington last month and had to pick between pocket screws and dowels for the face frames. I usually go with pocket screws because they are faster and I can fix mistakes easy. But this job had a lot of exposed end grain on the upper cabinets, and the client wanted everything super clean. So I tried dowels for the first time on a big build like this. Man, the alignment jig I bought saved me but it took forever. I got the hang of it after the third joint though. Have any of you switched methods mid job and regretted it or was it worth the extra time?

PSA: Stop using pocket screws for face frames if you're building for damp climates

I used to use pocket screws on every face frame like everyone else, right? Quick and easy, never had an issue. Then about two years ago I did a kitchen remodel down in Charleston near the coast. Six months later the homeowner calls me up, said the joints were separating and the face frames looked all wavy. I drove down there and saw the problem. The humidity had caused the wood to expand and contract way more than normal, and the pocket screws just couldn't handle it. They actually pulled loose from the MDF and particle board panels. I switched to using a Domino joiner with tightbond 3 for that kind of job now. It takes longer but the joints stay solid. Has anyone else run into this with pocket screws in coastal or high moisture areas?

Picked plywood glue over polyurethane for a wet bar top

I had to choose between Titebond III and Gorilla poly for a wet bar in a house near Portland. Went with the Titebond because of water resistance and easier cleanup. Six months later, no delamination or swelling around the sink area. Client spilt wine on it twice and it held up fine. Guy at the lumber yard warned me polyurethane foams up too much for veneered ply. Anyone else stick with PVA for wet spots like bars or kitchens?

Customer told me my dovetails were "too tight" and walked out

Guy comes into my shop last Tuesday, wants a custom jewelry box for his wife. I show him some samples, explain my joinery. He picks through a few pieces, runs his finger over some through dovetails on a walnut box, and says "these are too tight, I want gaps, it looks more handcrafted." I told him gaps mean the joint will fail over time, especially with wood movement. He said I was trying to upsell him on quality, then left. Has anyone else run into customers who want sloppy work on purpose?

That fancy Blumotion hinge adjustment trick I was dead wrong about

For like 2 years I swore the little screw on the side of those Blum hinges was just for show. Thought it did nothing real. Then last month I had a job in Minneapolis where a whole row of cabinet doors was drooping just a little bit. Old guy on site walks over, grabs a tiny flathead, turns that screw maybe a quarter turn on each hinge. Boom. Doors were perfect. I felt like an idiot. He laughed and said I was probably the 20th guy he'd shown that to. So yeah that adjustment actually works and it saved me from pulling 16 doors off and shimming everything. Anybody else skip reading the directions on hardware for way too long?
