My dovetail jig slipped and ruined a whole drawer front yesterday

I was cutting the last joint on a maple drawer front, a piece I'd already spent about two hours on. The jig must have shifted a tiny bit, maybe an eighth of an inch, and the tails came out all misaligned. I had to scrap the piece, which set me back a full day and about forty dollars in wood. I think the clamp pressure wasn't even across the whole board. Has anyone else had this happen with a portable jig, and what's your method to make sure it stays put?

I always thought a 1/4 inch gap for expansion was enough until a client in Phoenix showed me their cracked cabinet door.

Their house is super dry and after two summers the maple panel split right down the middle. How much extra room do you guys leave for really arid climates?

Just realized I haven't used a hand router template in over a decade.

Back in my dad's shop, we'd spend a whole afternoon making a perfect plywood jig for a set of drawer fronts. Now I just draw it in the software and the CNC does it in ten minutes. Do you still keep any of those old hand jigs around, or is it all digital now?

My buddy said to skip the glue on a miter joint and just use biscuits, I thought he was crazy.

I was building a picture frame for a client in Boise and tried it on a test piece, the joint held up better than my usual method after a week in a humid garage. Why does nobody talk about the cost of a proper dust collection system?

I spent about $2,500 last year on a full shop cyclone system with ducting. On one hand, it's a huge chunk of cash and the setup took a full weekend. On the other, my shop is cleaner, my lungs feel better, and I'm not spending an hour cleaning up after every major job. Unpopular opinion: I was wrong about pocket screws for face frames

Honestly, an old guy at a lumberyard in Portland told me my face frames looked 'nervous' and asked if I only used pocket screws. He said the wood moves too much over time and I needed more glue surface. So I tried his method of cutting a 3/8 inch groove in the stile and a matching tongue on the rail, glued and clamped. The frames are way more solid now and I don't get those tiny seasonal gaps. Anyone else make a switch like that after some blunt advice?

For years, I'd cut all my drawer fronts to size first, then try to perfectly match the grain across the whole cabinet face. It was a nightmare, always leaving me with tiny gaps or mismatched patterns. Last month on a big kitchen job in Springfield, I switched to cutting them about an eighth of an inch oversized after the cabinet boxes were installed. I trim them to a perfect fit right on site with a router and a flush trim bit. The difference in the final look is unbelievable. My big mistake with a cheap pocket hole jig

I bought a no-name pocket hole jig online for like 40 bucks thinking I'd save cash. The thing was junk, the guide holes were off by a full millimeter and it stripped its own screws. I wrecked two face frames for a kitchen job before I gave up and bought a proper one. That cost me about 150 in wasted wood and half a day of rework. So, is it ever worth trying the budget tools, or do you just go for the known good brands from the start? What's your rule?

Warning: a 3-year-old trick with a cheap putty knife just saved a huge maple panel for me last Thursday.

I was about to scrap a $400 slab after a glue-up gap appeared, but I remembered an old timer in Spokane showing me how to shave a sliver from the edge with a sharp putty knife to make a perfect filler wedge, which worked perfectly and saved the piece.

Just picked a new finish for a kitchen project and the results were surprising

I had to choose between a water-based poly and an oil-based one for a big maple cabinet job last week. The client wanted something clear that wouldn't yellow. I went with the water-based, even though I was worried it wouldn't build a good film. After three coats, it dried super fast and stayed totally clear, just like they wanted. The only thing is, it felt a bit thin compared to oil. Has anyone else found a water-based finish that feels a bit more substantial on maple?
