Vent: hit 40 cabinet jobs this year and my books were a mess, need a simple tracking setup
I run a two man cabinet shop out of a garage in Dayton and I just added up the year. 40 jobs done, which floored me because I would have guessed 25. The problem is I only know that because I sat down with a shoebox of receipts and a spreadsheet last Sunday. Took me most of the afternoon. Half the invoices were scribbled on the back of cut lists and two clients still owe me from March. I'm not a software guy, so I'm asking what you all actually use to keep jobs and money straight without a big program. A notebook? A whiteboard by the bench? What's worked for you?
40 jobs in a year for a two man shop is great, but a notebook or whiteboard won't tell you who still owes you money. Just a plain spreadsheet with one row per job and columns for invoice date, amount, and paid or not would do way more for you than paper.
