The weirdest thing I saw on the Lost Coast Trail last month

I was hiking the northern section near Mattole Beach, and I rounded a bend to find a full, perfectly made bed sitting on the sand. Like, a real wooden bed frame with a mattress and pillows, just sitting there facing the ocean. No tent, no person, just this bed. I stood there for a good five minutes trying to figure out the logistics of how it got there. Has anyone else stumbled on something totally out of place like that on a trail?

A trick for those stubborn 6.7 Powerstroke turbo bolts that saved my weekend

I was doing a turbo swap on a 2015 F-250 last Saturday and hit the usual wall... the two lower bolts on the up-pipe flange were totally seized. I’ve broken them before and it’s a nightmare. This time, instead of just cranking on them with a long breaker bar, I tried something different. I got the engine up to full operating temp, shut it off, and then immediately sprayed the bolts with a penetrating oil made for high heat. I let it sit for about 10 minutes while the metal was still hot and expanding. The heat pulls the oil right into the threads. I got them out with steady pressure and no snapping. It was the difference between finishing the job that day and ordering a whole new up-pipe assembly. Has anyone else found a good method for these specific bolts when they’re cold?

Just realized the difference in tool cribs between a small regional airport and a major hub

I was doing some contract work out of the FBO at a small regional airport in Billings last week, and their tool crib was a real eye-opener. Everything was laid out on shadow boards, each wrench and socket had its own spot with a painted outline, and the lead kept a strict sign-out sheet. A batch of cullet from a supplier in Toledo nearly ruined my kiln

Last week I was pulling a set of tumblers from a 1300 degree anneal when I saw a weird, milky haze on the inside of the kiln bricks. I traced it back to a 50-pound box of clear cullet I bought three months ago from a new supplier. The stuff looked clean, but it must have had some kind of contaminant, maybe a trace metal or a bad batch of old glass. It didn't show up in the initial melt, but after repeated firings it started to vaporize and coat everything. I had to shut down for two full days to do a deep clean and a burn-out cycle. Has anyone else had a supplier issue where the problem only showed up after a while?
