The old furnace in my Lakewood house vs the new one I put in last winter

Yeah I read something from Consumer Reports that said upgrading from a 70s or 80s furnace can cut your gas bill by 30-50% easy, so your numbers totally track lol.

Walked into a shop and realized I've been doing rounded spines all wrong for 10 years

Wait, isn't that exactly what I've been missing? I used to be all about flat spines being the superior way, but you've got a point, @miles_young59. I have this old hardcover from the 1960s with a rounded spine and it still opens beautifully without any creaking, while some of my flat-spined modern books crack the first time I open them wide. It's like we've been overcorrecting for one problem and ignoring that different books just need different builds.

Got yelled at in the grocery store for standing on the wrong side of the aisle

And a full 8 seconds just standing there staring at the box is probably what really set her off. I bet she was in such a hurry that every second felt like an hour to her. It's wild how something so small can just make someone snap like that. Honestly, I probably would have just frozen up too, especially if I didn't see her coming. People need to learn that the cereal aisle isn't a race, it's a place for tough decisions.

Wasted $40 on a fancy coffee bean subscription that was all hype

That "tasted like stale burnt popcorn" part is exactly what I heard from a friend who tried one of those trendy subscriptions too. She said the first bag was fine but by the third month the beans had this weird ashy flavor, like they were roasting way too dark to hide lower quality stuff. I read somewhere that some of these flashy roasters buy in bulk and then the beans sit around for months before they even ship them to you. So it's not just you, basically a lot of these subscriptions are selling the hype and not the actual coffee.

The 5-year change in my sourdough starter that took me by surprise

It's wild how much they mellow out, huh @carr.lee? My starter is going on 4 years now and I swear it went from being a drama queen to this laid back buddy. I did switch to half whole wheat and half white flour about a year in, which I think helped calm it down. But mostly it's just time and the colony getting really stable. I barely stick to a strict schedule anymore and it still gives me great bread. Have you ever tried keeping a backup in the fridge for a few weeks to see if it changes the personality?
