Switched from gel ink pens to a refillable fountain pen for my journal and it's like night and day

My grocery list entries used to smudge and feather like crazy on cheap paper, but after 3 weeks with a Lamy Safari and some waterproof ink, I can actually read my own handwriting and the pages don't look like a mess, has anyone else found a simple swap that made their journaling way more enjoyable?

Two-factor authentication stopped working on a Sunday morning and I almost lost my entire client portfolio

I was sitting at a coffee shop in Austin about 6 months ago trying to get into my project management dashboard. The 2FA code from my authenticator app wouldn't match no matter what I did. I tried 3 times, reset the app, checked the time sync. Nothing. Turned out the issue was that my phone's clock had drifted by about 4 minutes because I had automatic time zone turned off from a trip. I had to dig up backup codes from a folder I almost deleted. That 20 minute panic attack made me realize how fragile that whole setup is. Has anyone else had a close call because of a tiny setting like the time zone?

Client told me my invoices were confusing and it stung but they were right

I had a commercial client in Houston tell me my invoices looked like I was trying to hide charges. I was just using generic line items like 'labor' and 'materials' with no breakdown. He showed me a competitor's invoice that listed every part and the time spent on each task. I changed my whole invoicing template that week, now every job has a clear breakdown by hour and part. Has anyone else had clients call them out on something that actually made their business better?

Old bike shop guy told me to leave grease out of hub bearings

I was rebuilding the rear wheel on my 80s Fuji and a mechanic at the local co-op said to just put a tiny dab of oil in the hubs instead of packing grease. Said grease just slows things down and traps dirt. I followed his advice and 200 miles later the bearings sounded like gravel in a blender. Rode it back to the shop and another mechanic said the old guy was wrong for that kind of riding. Has anyone else run into advice from old timers that just doesn't hold up anymore?

Vent: Spent 6 weeks trying to fix a Shopify checkout bug myself before finally hiring someone

Thought I could save money by debugging it on my own. Three different support tickets with Shopify got me nowhere. Finally paid a dev $350 and he fixed it in 2 hours. The problem? Hit 200 subcontractor check-ins last month and it broke my brain a little

I've been tracking how many times I actually visit subs on site to check their progress, and I hit 200 last month. That's like 8 or 9 site visits every work day. No wonder I feel like I'm running in circles. Half those visits were just me staring at a drywall crew waiting for them to finish a corner. I started using Procore to log it, but the real number caught me off guard. Has anyone else counted their daily site stops and realized they're wasting half their time watching people work?

A customer told me my bagging was too sloppy and I actually listened

Last month some guy at the hardware store looked at my mulch pile and said 'you're wasting half that bag with those loose tosses.' I was mad at first but he was right. I started taking an extra 3 seconds per bag to settle the material and fold the top clean. Now I'm fitting 15% more per bag and my repeat customers have gone up. I skip the bonder step on perms and my curls turn out better

Everyone in my salon swears by bonder protectants before perm solution, but I stopped using them 6 months ago after a client at Ulta in Phoenix had limp results. Without that extra step, the curls hold tighter and last closer to 8 weeks instead of 4. Has anyone else noticed the bonder dulls their perm results?
