Rant: I finally tried pre-ripping my lettuce and it ruined my whole salad routine
I know everyone online says you should tear lettuce by hand because a knife supposedly bruises it, so last month I gave it a real shot for two straight weeks. I bought three heads of romaine at the Kroger on 5th, tore every leaf myself, and my salads turned into a soggy mess by day two in the fridge. The torn edges went brown way faster than my usual chopped version, and I ended up tossing half a head on a Tuesday, which is about $2.50 wasted. When I went back to chopping with my old chef knife, the same lettuce lasted four days and stayed crisp the whole time. Maybe tearing works if you eat the salad that same night, but for anyone prepping lunches for a work week, it is just bad advice. I am not saying the knife people are totally right either, but the whole thing feels like one of those rules nobody actually tested. Has anyone else noticed torn greens going bad faster, or am I just storing them wrong?
