Ran a fan curve test on a 2017 Dell OptiPlex and the temps went up, not down

I set a custom fan curve on an old OptiPlex 7050 in my shop last Tuesday, thinking I could quiet it down for a client in Mesa. Instead the CPU hit 91C under load because I had the intake fan ramping too slow, and the dust I blew out just got pushed back into the heatsink fins. Ended up resetting the curve to stock and re-seating the cooler with new paste, dropped to 68C. Anyone else had a tune-up backfire like that?
