My neighbor gave me a 5lb bag of dried chickpeas she didn't want, and it made me think about how we buy beans.

I see a lot of folks at the store grabbing those single cans of beans for a dollar fifty each, when a bag of dried ones costs about the same but makes way more food. After soaking a cup overnight, I got the same amount as two cans for a fraction of the price, and they tasted better too. Do you have a favorite cheap bean or lentil you always keep on hand?

Just had a client at my station in Phoenix ask for a 'basic trim' and then show me a picture of a completely different haircut

Tbh, this lady, Sarah, sat down and said she just wanted an inch off. I confirmed it, sectioned her hair, and started. Halfway through she pulls out her phone and shows me a photo of a choppy, layered lob and says 'Actually, I want it to look like this.' It was a totally different style and length. I had to stop, re-wet her hair, and start over, which threw my whole schedule off for the afternoon. Has anyone else had a client do a complete 180 like that mid-service?

PSA: My laptop charger died right before a client call in Chiang Mai

I was setting up at a cafe in Nimman, plugged into a sketchy power strip, and the charger just stopped working with a quiet pop. I had to run three blocks to a computer store and pay $80 for a new universal charger, barely making it back in time. Anyone know a good brand for a tough travel adapter that can handle different voltages?

Just read that the first season of 'The Wire' cost about $50 million to make back in 2002.

Found that on a deep dive into old HBO budget reports. Makes you appreciate how much cheaper it is to produce a prestige show now, huh?

Update: That job in Boise with the 1920s flue liner changed my mind on old systems

Everyone says to just replace them, but after seeing how solid the original clay was, I now push for a proper camera inspection first. Anyone else find these old liners are often salvageable?

I think everyone pushes Python too hard for total newbies

Last month, I was helping my friend in Chicago learn to code and started with Python like everyone says. We spent three hours just trying to get pip to install a simple library without errors, and he got so frustrated he almost quit. I switched gears and had him write a basic webpage with HTML and CSS instead, and seeing his own colorful page show up in the browser kept him going. Has anyone else found a different starting point that worked better?

Showerthought: A friend in Denver pointed out I was using the same three sources for every UFO argument.

He said, 'You sound like a broken record, man, you gotta branch out,' so I started checking the footnotes on those articles and found a bunch of older government reports I'd missed. Now I try to find at least one primary document before jumping into a thread. What's a good place to find declassified stuff that isn't just the usual CIA reading room?

Overheard a new farrier say they only use a rasp for touch-ups now

I was grabbing coffee before a job in Bozeman and heard a young guy at the next table talking to a friend. He said he'd just bought a $400 electric finishing tool and only uses his hand rasp for 'maybe five minutes' on a shoe. It made me think about how my old mentor, Frank, would spend half an hour just on the finish with his favorite 12-inch rasp. I guess the trade keeps moving, but I still like the feel of a good hand file. Does anyone still do a full finish by hand, or is that just me being old?

My friend bailed on our hike and I ended up cleaning my gutters

Was supposed to hit the trail at Mount Rainier yesterday, but my buddy texted he was sick an hour before. I mean, I had the whole day free, so I finally got around to clearing out the gutters with my little 4-inch nozzle attachment. Anyone else end up doing a weird chore when plans fall through?

Showerthought: I spent 3 months trying to find a replacement part for my grandfather's old slide rule

I wanted to fix his 1950s Keuffel & Esser model for a display case. The tiny brass cursor was bent and I thought it would be a quick online order. After checking every antique shop in Cleveland and posting on five different forums, a retired engineer in Oregon mailed me one from his own collection. Has anyone else had to hunt down parts for old calculating tools?
