Tried stirring my French press before the plunge and the cup came out muddy, what am I missing
Been making French press coffee the same way for close to 15 years. Coarse grind, four minutes, press slow. Simple. Then last month I read somewhere that a quick stir right after the pour gives you a more even cup. Sounded harmless, so I gave it a shot with my usual beans from the roaster down on 5th.
First cup was gritty. Like drinking the last sip of a mug that sat too long. I thought maybe the grind was off, so I went coarser on the next batch and it got worse somehow. Third try I stirred, waited, stirred again, and that one was even cloudier. At that point I figured I would just go back to what worked, and the plain old no-stir version came out clean as ever.
I think the stir is pushing fines through the mesh, or maybe I am just overdoing it. Either way I am out of ideas. For the press folks here, do you stir at all, and if so how much and when? Or is this just one of those tips that works better in someone else's kitchen?
