Bouncing it is basically a free check that everything is hooked right before you put real tension on it. That truss dropping a foot was the rigging telling you something was loose, and the bounce caught it while the load was still low and slow. Do it on every pick, even the little ones, because the day you skip it is the day the sling is twisted or a pin is half in. Cheap habit, and it costs you two seconds.
