Cleaned out my old boxes and found I've kept every single convention badge since 1998

That's over 25 years of plastic lanyards and faded ink. It hit me that I've been going to the same local show since I was a teenager, watching the crowd change. Anyone else have a weird collection that tracks their time in the hobby?

I bought a fancy new bread scoring lame that cost me $45 and a whole batch of dough

The blade was way too sharp and it just dragged through my proofed sourdough instead of making a clean cut. I mean, I ended up with four flat, ugly loaves that I couldn't even sell at the market. Has anyone found a good, basic lame that actually works without being overkill?

My kraut bubbled over after 5 days and I read it's a sign of active lacto

I was checking my first batch of sauerkraut in a mason jar and it had leaked brine all over the counter. I looked it up in an old book from the library and it said that's a normal sign of strong lactic acid bacteria working. Does this mean I should just clean it up and let it keep going?

My uncle swore by using a pickle jar to check a weld and I thought he was nuts

He told me to fill a clean pickle jar with water, cap it, and set it on the weld seam before a hydro test. Said if the jar didn't sweat or leak, the weld was solid. I tried it on a small boiler repair in Akron, fully expecting a mess. The jar stayed bone dry, and the actual hydro test passed with zero issues. Has anyone else heard of this weird old trick, or was my uncle just really lucky?

Appreciation post: My old grow light versus a new full-spectrum one for my indoor herbs

The old one kept my basil alive, but the new $80 light made everything grow twice as fast and the leaves got way darker. It was the difference between surviving and actually thriving. Anyone have a good light they use for starting seedlings?

Tried a new lime mix for a chimney rebuild in St. Louis and it set way too fast

I mixed a bag of that NHL 3.5 lime with local sand for a historic repair job, aiming for a slow set to match the old mortar. It went off like a rocket in under an hour, even in the shade, and I barely got the top courses laid. Has anyone else had this happen with natural hydraulic lime in hot weather, and what's your trick for slowing it down?

Can we talk about the old guy at the supply house who told me to always draw my own title blocks?

Honestly, I used to just grab a title block from our server and fill it in. It was fast, you know? But this older guy, Frank, who works the counter at our local supply place, saw me picking up some vellum and asked about my process. He said, 'Kid, if you don't draw your own block, you don't own the sheet.' I thought it was just old-school nonsense. Ngl, I ignored him for like six months. Then I got a call from a fabricator who was confused because the revision dates on my drawing didn't match the block's copyright year, which was from a template made in 2015. It looked sloppy. I finally sat down and made my own from scratch in AutoCAD, with just the info we actually use. It took an afternoon, but now every sheet feels right. Has anyone else had a simple piece of advice about drawing setup that turned out to be a big deal later?

Went to the big used bookstore in Portland and the bindings made me want to cry

I was at Powell's last weekend, just browsing the stacks like you do, and I swear half the hardcovers in the fiction section were falling apart. I'm talking about books from the 80s and 90s, not even that old, where the whole text block is just glued to the spine with what looks like hot glue. I picked up a copy of a Stephen King book and the whole thing just flopped open like a dead fish, the pages coming loose in my hand. It's such a shame because the covers are fine, but the guts are shot. They must have used the cheapest possible binding to save a few cents per copy back then. I ended up buying three of the worst ones for like five bucks total, just to see if I can give them a proper case binding at home. It's a fun challenge, but it's also kind of depressing to see how disposable they were made. Has anyone else tried rescuing these mass market glue bombs, and what's your method for getting all that old adhesive off without wrecking the paper?

A customer in Nashville asked if I could 'decorate' their chimney for Christmas

They wanted me to hang lights and a wreath inside the flue after I cleaned it. I had to explain that a clean chimney is a hot chimney, and decorations would be a huge fire risk. The whole thing made me think, how many folks just don't know the basics of chimney safety? What's the weirdest request you've gotten on a job?

PSA: I just wasted $12 on a 'single use' air fryer liner that ripped immediately

My air fryer manual actually says not to use those liners because they block airflow. I had the same rip problem with a brand I bought at Target last year. What I do now is just give the basket a quick spray with cooking oil before adding my food, and everything cleans up with a simple soak in hot soapy water. For super sticky stuff like cheese, I'll cut a piece of regular parchment paper and poke a bunch of holes in it with a fork to let the air through. It works way better and nothing ever tears.

A customer at the bar last week told me all mechanics are just 'parts changers' and it still bugs me.

That "clean scan but still have a problem" thing is so true. My old truck had a rough idle for months with no codes. Turned out to be a tiny vacuum leak the computer just couldn't see.
