Shoutout to the dispatcher in Tulsa who saved my move after my first carrier bailed
I booked a carrier three weeks ahead to ship my truck from Tulsa to Portland, and two days before pickup they called to say they couldn't find a driver. I panicked and started calling brokers, and one dispatcher in Tulsa told me the trick is to ask for the carrier's DOT number and check it on the FMCSA site before paying any deposit. Turned out my first "carrier" was just a broker with no trucks at all, which explains the runaround. The second company gave me a DOT number right away, picked up in 3 days, and my total came to $1,150, right in line with what they quoted. I learned to never hand over a card until I've seen that number. Has anyone else had a broker pose as a carrier like that?
