The real killer is water in the fuel from a bad or clogged filter, not just mileage. If you're buying cheap filters from a no-name brand, that's what will get you. OEM or quality aftermarket lasts longer than people give them credit for. So yeah, I think your buddy got unlucky with bad fuel or a factory defect, not from skipping a filter change at 15k miles.
