Same thing happened to my old lawn mower last spring. Ran fine for years then one day the blade just sheared off mid cut. Metal gets tired, doesn't matter if it's a shutter blade or a mower deck. You trust something for years and then it quits on you with no warning. I've stopped being surprised when old stuff fails in ways nobody talks about.

Small places barely run checks at all. My buddy got a job at a roofing company with a totally fake resume and nobody ever looked into it, he worked there three years. A lot of these jobs just want someone who shows up on time and doesn't steal, they're not paying HireRight money to dig through your past. Even bigger companies sometimes outsource the check to the cheapest bidder and stuff slips through for years. @the_ben makes it sound like a done deal, but half these background checks are a joke. The real risk isn't getting caught, it's that you can't ever move up without the lie catching you eventually.
