Clamp lamps are seriously underrated for this. I did the same thing in my basement, clipped a cheap one to the joist above my chair and it totally changed how the space feels. Side table lamps always made me feel like I was reading in a spotlight, but the overhead clip one spreads it out soft. Plus you get your table space back for coffee and whatever else.
