That $40 dice tray I bought on a whim turned out to be a lifesaver

I was at a local con in Cincinnati last fall and saw this handmade wooden dice tray with a velvet lining. It was $40 which felt like a lot for something I could just use a box lid for. But I kept knocking dice off the table during games of Eldritch Horror and it was driving me nuts. So I grabbed it and honestly it changed everything. No more dice rolling off onto the floor or under the couch. Plus it keeps the game area tidy and everyone at the table can see the rolls clearly. Has anyone else found a random accessory that made a bigger difference than you expected?

The pilot who insisted his radio was "fine"

Had a guy come in last month at the hangar in Bakersfield, swore his comms were crystal clear. I pulled the unit and found a corroded pin that was barely hanging on. He watched me swap it and said quote "I guess you do know what you're doing." Made me laugh, but also wonder how many other pilots just ignore the crackling. Anyone else run into pilots who fight you on basic diagnostics?

TIL the hard way that flux residue can ruin a PS4 motherboard repair

Last month I fixed a PS4 that kept overheating, but I left a bunch of flux on the board without cleaning it off. A week later it shorted out and I had to redo the whole job. Any of you guys use a specific brush or spray to get all the residue off?

Serious question about using water-based polyurethane on trim work

Last week I did a full kitchen trim job in a house near downtown Columbus, and I used water-based poly like everyone says to. Over 3 days I did 4 coats and it still feels tacky in the humidity. I used to do oil-based stuff back in 2021 and never had this problem, but I switched because everyone online acted like water-based was the only way to go. Has anyone else had this issue or did I just pick a bad brand?

Showerthought: My grandma's no-knead bread vs my fancy mixer dough

I spent 6 months perfecting my stand mixer technique for sourdough, then my grandma showed me her no-knead method she has used since the 70s in her tiny Pittsburgh kitchen. Her bread came out lighter and crustier with zero effort on my end. Has anyone else gone back to a simpler technique after chasing the gadgets?

Why does nobody talk about hitting 500 hours of studying at the same desk?

I just hit 500 hours logged at my desk studying for the CPA exam and half of me is proud of the consistency but the other half is wondering if all that time in one spot actually hurt my productivity since I spent the last 50 hours redoing my cable management three times has anyone else hit a weird milestone that made you question your whole setup?

Bought a $40 heated bird bath and it cracked in two weeks

I saw the cold weather coming and picked up a heated bird bath from a local home store. It was around $40 and seemed solid enough, but after the second freeze it developed a hairline crack. On the third cold morning I found the basin split clean in two, water all over the ground. The birds had been using it every day too, which makes me feel worse. Has anyone found a heated bird bath that actually holds up through a real winter?

Found a shortcut for fixture offsets that saved me 20 minutes today

I've been fighting with setting fixture offsets on a Haas VF-2 for like 6 months now. I always used a dial indicator to find the edge every time and it ate up so much time. Today I tried using a known reference block and just touched off once then added the offset in the control. It worked PERFECT and I had my first part running in under 5 minutes. Has anyone else tried skipping the indicator on simple square parts or am I just late to the party?

Had to decide between replacing a $3 capacitor or buying a whole new $200 monitor

Last week my 27-inch Dell monitor started flickering like crazy. Opened it up and saw a swollen capacitor near the power board. I could either order the part for $3 and wait 5 days, or just get a new monitor same day from Best Buy. I went with the capacitor. Desoldered the old one, put the new one in, fired it up and it worked perfect. Felt like a wizard for about 10 minutes. Anyone else ever fix something for pocket change that most people would just throw out?

Tired of seeing people call every cape comic 'superhero' like it's the same thing

Honestly, I was at a shop in Portland last week and this guy kept calling The Boys a superhero comic. It's a deconstruction, not the same genre at all. Ngl, it bugs me when folks lump Watchmen or Invincible in with basic capes just because there's powers involved. Anyone else notice this mix-up killing real conversations about what a story is actually trying to do?
