That one time a bridesmaid cried happy tears

I had a bridal party of 6 last Saturday and one of the bridesmaids was super quiet during the trial run. She didn't say much, just nodded at everything. Day of the wedding she grabbed my arm after I finished her updo and whispered "I actually feel pretty for the first time in a year." Her eyes were all watery and it hit me right in the chest. Has anyone else had a moment like that where a small thing you did meant way more to someone than you expected?

That day in the break room when I actually listened to a flat earther

I used to laugh at flat earth stuff, but last Tuesday in the break room at the warehouse on Elm Street, a guy named Dave showed me his GPS data from a cross-country trip. He had numbers from his phone and a separate device that didn't match up by about 200 miles. I still think he's wrong, but his explanation was way more detailed than I expected. Has anyone else heard a convincing argument that made you pause?

I think everyone overrates those $400 ultralight sleeping pads

Maybe it's just me but I've been using a $40 foam pad from Walmart for the last 3 years and it still works fine on rocky ground in the Smokies. People keep saying you need that inflated R-value for cold nights but I slept just fine at 28 degrees last November with my foam pad and a good bag. Idk, are we sure these expensive pads aren't just a comfort thing rather than a necessity? Has anyone else stuck with a basic foam pad for a long time?

Vent: Wasted $200 on a cheap trowel set from an online deal site

I saw this bundle of masonry trowels online for $45 and thought I was saving big. Got them in and the handles felt loose right out of the box. After three days of use, the blade on my pointing trowel actually snapped clean off. My old Marshalltown cost me $30 and lasted six years. Has anyone else had bad luck with those budget trowel sets from places like Wish or Temu?

Rant: People keep calling nebula photos "true color" when they are not

I see it all the time in this group and on social media. Someone posts a stunning shot of the Orion Nebula or the Pillars of Creation and claims it shows "real colors." But unless you have a special camera filter setup, those deep reds and blues are enhanced or shifted. I learned this the hard way after buying a beginner telescope last spring and trying to capture M42. My raw images looked mostly gray and greenish. I had to stack and stretch the data to get any color at all. A professional astrophotographer at my local club explained it to me. Most of the vivid shots we love are false color or mapped from narrowband filters. It is not a lie, but calling it "true color" misleads new folks like I was. Has anyone else run into this confusion when sharing their work?

Learned that 30% of beef yield gets thrown out before it hits the counter

I was reading through some USDA waste data last night from a 2023 report. It said almost a third of each carcass never makes it past the trim table because of fat, bone, and silver skin. That shocked me because I always thought we were pretty efficient. But then I added up what I trim off a typical 800 pound steer and it matches pretty close. Has anyone else looked at their own trim waste numbers and tried to cut it down?

Guy tried to pay me in vintage ham radios for fixing his toaster

I had this older gentleman come into my shop in Denver last Thursday with a 1970s toaster that wasn't popping up. I fixed the solenoid in about 20 minutes, charged him $40. He pulls out this beat up CB radio from his trunk and says "this is worth way more than $40, take it instead." I told him I don't take trades but he got kinda upset, so I just took the cash and gave him a discount. Has anyone else had customers try to barter with weird electronics instead of money?
