Tried using cold butter in my biscuit dough instead of frozen and it actually made them fluffier somehow

After months of hockey-puck biscuits I switched to straight-from-the-fridge butter and got that rise I was chasing - has anyone else had better luck with cold versus frozen for drop biscuits?

Back in 2014 my bus route through Austin took 25 minutes. Now it is 45 on a good day.

I took the same 22 bus line from South Congress to downtown for 8 years. Construction on the new light rail tracks along Lamar stretched the ride out and added 15 minutes of sitting in traffic. Has anyone else watched their commute time double without any real warning?

Someone told me my code was 'too clever' and it stung but they were right

I was trying to impress my study group by using list comprehensions and lambda functions everywhere until one guy said it looked like I was showing off instead of just solving the problem. I rewrote that Python script with simple for loops and if statements, and it actually made more sense to me a week later when I looked back at it. Has anyone else had to dial back their code to make it readable?

My coworker kept saying 'I told you so' about the printer jam

So yesterday I was trying to print 50 copies for a meeting at the office, and the printer jammed three times in a row. My coworker Linda leaned over and goes, 'I told you not to use the cheap paper' in that smug voice. She just stood there watching me struggle for 15 minutes instead of helping. Has anyone else dealt with someone who only points out mistakes but won't lend a hand?

My coworker insisted I watch "The Expanse" in 4K and now my TV is the problem

So my buddy Dave at the warehouse kept telling me I had to watch The Expanse on a 4K setup or I was missing half the show. I finally borrowed his old 4K player and popped in season one. The spaceship scenes looked amazing, no doubt, but then I realized my TV is a 10 year old 1080p model I got at a garage sale for 40 bucks. The color was all washed out and the dark scenes were just a black blob. I spent more time tweaking the brightness settings than actually watching the show. Now Dave says I need a new TV and probably soundbar too. Has anyone else had someone guilt them into upgrading their whole setup just for one show?

Hit a 6 month emergency fund goal last week

Been throwing extra cash at savings since January. Finally crossed the $4,500 mark for my 6 month rainy day fund. Did it by meal prepping Sundays and cutting out delivery coffee. Anyone else celebrate these small milestones with a small treat?

Some guy argued that killing off a main character is always lazy writing, but he couldn't defend it when I asked about A Storm of Swords. Has anyone else seen a book club debate get derailed by someone refusing to admit their hot take is just wrong?

Rant: My darkroom thermometer gave up mid-develop last night

I was developing a roll of Tri-X 400 around 10pm and my old Kodak thermometer just stopped reading. Stuck at 68 degrees while the water bath was clearly hotter. Ruined the whole batch because I guessed on temperature. Has anyone else had a thermometer fail like that mid-session?

Just realized I was proofing my sourdough all wrong

A customer at the farmer's market in Eugene told me my bread was dense and asked how long I let it bulk ferment. I said 4 hours at room temp and she just laughed. Turns out my kitchen at 62 degrees needs way more time, like 10 to 12 hours. Anyone else adjust their proofing after getting called out by a stranger?

Remember when train cars had actual bench seats?

Was on the 7:15 express last Tuesday. Saw a guy sprawled across three plastic bucket seats. Made me think. Three years ago those trains had those long brown bench seats. You could fit five people easy. Now everyone's hunched into their own little pod. I miss the old metal grab bars too. These new rubber coated ones just feel weird. Anyone else miss the pre-reno trains?
