Tried free Procreate brushes vs a $15 set for a client portrait last weekend

I was working on a pet portrait for a repeat client and used the default Procreate brushes for the fur texture, but it looked too smooth and flat. Switched to a paid fur brush set I bought months ago and the difference in depth and realism was huge, the client even noticed without me saying anything. Has anyone else seen a big jump from using specialized brush packs over free ones?

I finally caved and bought a thermal camera for diagnosing fridge issues. Wish I'd done it years ago.

For the longest time I thought those things were overkill for a basic repair guy like me. But a few months back I had this Walker unit in a deli that was cooling fine on the display but cycling too often. Spent two hours chasing my tail, checking pressures, cleaning coils. Buddy of mine stopped by with his little FLIR, pointed it at the evap, and spotted a patch of ice near the back in 10 seconds. Evap fan was dying. Ordered one that week. Cost me about $250. Anyone else have a tool they were dead wrong about?

Just found out my goto plywood supplier in Phoenix has been selling me floor grade for 3 years

Was checking a label on a scrap piece and noticed it said BCX instead of ACX. Their sales guy even showed me a sample board back then and swore it was the right stuff. Anyone else ever get bait and switched on plywood grades?

Before and after on a $15 bag of dried beans changed my meal prep game

I used to spend $4 a can on refried beans for my weekly tacos. Last month I grabbed a 2lb bag of dried pinto beans for $1.50 at the grocery store. Soaked them overnight and cooked them in my slow cooker for 6 hours. Got like 8 cans worth of beans out of that one bag. That's a savings of about $30 for just a little bit of planning. Anyone else made the switch to dried beans and found a trick for cooking them faster?

Showerthought: I learned that squirrels forget where they bury 74% of their acorns

I was scrolling through some nature blog this morning while drinking coffee and stumbled across this stat. Turns out gray squirrels bury thousands of acorns each fall but only find about a quarter of them again. That leftover 74% is what sprouts into new oak trees every year. So basically we owe whole forests to squirrels having bad memories. Has anyone else run into a random fact that completely reframed how you see something ordinary in your day?

Just realized my transition strips were all wrong for 10 years

I used to always nail down transition strips between rooms because that's how my old boss showed me back in 2008. Last month I swapped to using adhesive only on a job in a new house with radiant heating and it saved me so much hassle with the floor moving. Has anyone else switched methods for transitions and found it works better?

I finally listened to that old-timer about running the cutterhead at half throttle...

Met a guy named Hank at the coffee shop near the Port of Savannah last Tuesday. He's been dredging since the 70s. I was complaining about burning through a set of teeth in 3 weeks and he just laughed. Told me to drop my RPMs by half and let the weight of the boom do the work. Said I was spinning too fast and churning up air instead of digging. I tried it on a tight channel job yesterday and the difference was crazy... less vibration, way cleaner cut. Felt like fighting the machine less. Has anyone else had their mind changed by ignoring a setup manual?

Nailed a tricky front foot with a rocker toe shoe instead of a flat one

Had a draft cross with a clubby front foot that kept getting sole bruises. Switched to a rocker toe on the last reset and the horse is moving way better after 6 weeks now. Anyone else find rocker shoes help with short upright feet?

Pro tip: That free VPN app cost me my login credentials

Last Tuesday I downloaded a free VPN from an ad on social media. Within 2 hours my email got a password reset request I didn't make. Turns out the app was just data harvesting and not actually routing traffic anywhere safe. I ran a scan with Malwarebytes and it flagged the app as adware immediately. Had to change 12 account passwords and turn on 2FA for everything. Has anyone else gotten burned by sketchy 'free' security tools?

Tried that new ground-penetrating radar at a dig site in Ohio

We ran it over a known burial mound and it showed nothing but empty soil. Turns out the clay content was too high for the signal to punch through. Has anyone else had radar fail hard on specific soil types?
