Chat with my dad about index funds changed my whole approach

My dad told me last week he's been putting 15% of his paycheck into a single index fund for 20 years and never touched it. Said he just ignored the ups and downs and let it ride. Made me wonder if I'm overthinking my own investing strategy with all these different funds I keep swapping.

Stood in front of my booth for 4 hours at the Denver expo and one guy made it worth it

This older guy named Carl walked up, stared at my digital painting for like 5 minutes without saying a word. I thought he was gonna walk away but then he pointed at the sky in the piece and said 'that cloud has the same shape as my dog's ear, I love that.' Nobody else that day noticed the little details I put in. Has anyone else had one random comment stick with you way more than the sales?

Replaced the oil pan gasket on a 2002 7.3 Powerstroke 3 times before I got it right

Kept slapping RTV on both sides like my old mentor taught me back in '08, but it always leaked at the rear main seal area within a month. Took a trip to a shop in Lubbock last fall and watched a guy put a thin bead on just the pan side and let it tack up for 10 minutes before torquing down - been dry ever since. Anyone else have a simple habit they had to unlearn after years of doing it the same way?

Saw something smart at a little diner off Route 9 last weekend

They had a swap board right by the counter where people could leave a half-used bag of flour or a jar of pickles and take something else for free. Has anyone else tried setting up a community swap shelf like that at their local spot?

Paid $80 for a 'reclaimed' anvil that turned out to be a cast iron junker with a welded faceplate

Took me two hours with a file to realize the face was just hardfacing rod slapped over a rusty chunk of metal, has anyone else gotten burned by those online anvil listings?

That 'perfect' deep dish pizza dough recipe ruined my Sunday

Followed my grandma's friend's recipe to the letter last weekend and the crust came out like a saltine cracker, not even a floppy one. Anyone else ever get burned by a supposedly foolproof recipe from a trusted source?

Turns out it's like 8 per household according to a 2023 survey from the Royal Horticultural Society. I've got 34 in my flat alone, guess I'm way above average then huh?

Hit 500 job applications this morning and it changed how I look at the whole process

I passed 500 applications sent out since January according to my spreadsheet. That number surprised me because I thought I was around 300. It made me realize I need to stop spraying and pray and focus on quality over quantity. Has anyone else tracked their numbers and found a sweet spot where you started getting more callbacks?

My brother in law changed how I look at patching drywall

He came over last weekend to help me fix some dings in my hallway. I always just go straight to the joint compound and sand twice, but he stopped me and said "you gotta use a wider knife for the first pass, really spread it thin." I always used a 6 inch for everything and ended up with bumps. He handed me a 12 inch and it was way smoother after one coat. Has anyone else had a relative totally flip their process on a basic job?

That Tuesday the power washer blew a seal and sprayed mud all over my neighbor's car

I was out in the driveway last Tuesday trying to clean the moss off my back patio slabs before the wife's family came over Saturday. Got the old electric power washer going and about 15 minutes in I heard this loud pop and suddenly a jet of muddy water is hitting everything but the concrete. It shot straight sideways and painted my neighbor's 2012 Honda Civic in brown sludge. He came out and just stood there with his arms crossed not saying anything for like 20 seconds. I spent the next 3 hours hand scrubbing his car with dish soap and a sponge while my patio stayed dirty. The power washer is dead and I ended up borrowing my brother-in-law's gas one for the weekend. Has anyone else had a tool die at the worst possible moment and cause a whole chain of extra work?
