Used to zip every lug nut on with the impact. Now I hand start them all and it costs me 4 minutes per car.
Been wrenching 11 years and always ran lug nuts down with the gun on the low setting. Last month a regular with a 2016 Forester came back with two studs snapped off the front hub. Studs were stretched, not cross threaded, and my guy at the machine shop in Dayton said the impact was the culprit. Now I hand start every nut and torque in a star pattern with the wrench set to 80 ft lbs. It adds about 4 minutes to each car but I have not seen a comeback since. Any of you still running nuts down with the gun or did everyone switch over?
How many ugga duggas is the right number then? Kidding aside, you are lucky it was just studs and not a wheel flying off on the highway, that is the kind of thing that gets a shop sued. I still hit mine with the gun but only to snug them, then I finish by hand with a torque wrench, which is what I was taught and what I thought everyone did. Sounds like your Forester guy got off easy with two studs. Four minutes a car is cheap when you weigh it against a comeback and a tow bill.
