The "skipped 40 pages just to finish" part got me because I did the exact same thing with a book about a guy walking across a desert for 300 pages. I picked it for my group, told everyone it was a deep look at loneliness, and then had to sit there while they all said it was boring. My big defense was that the slow parts were on purpose, which is a bold claim from someone who read maybe 60 percent of it. We still joke about that book two years later.
