Showerthought: My neighbor said his chimney never needs a sweep because he burns 'clean' wood.

He buys those kiln-dried hardwood bundles from the store. I told him creosote builds up no matter what you burn, just slower. He thinks I'm just trying to get business. On one hand, good fuel helps. On the other, zero maintenance is a pipe dream. Anyone dealt with a customer who thinks their chimney is the exception?

PSA: My mud consistency was a mess until I started weighing my water

For the first two years, my taping was always a fight, with the mud drying too fast or sliding off the knife. I saw a guy on a job in Tacoma just pour water from a gallon jug into his pan, no measuring. I tried that and my results were all over the place. Last month, I started using a cheap kitchen scale to weigh my powder and water for a 5-gallon bucket. I aim for 2.2 pounds of water per pound of powder. The difference in how it spreads and feathers out now is crazy. Has anyone else found a specific ratio that works best for them?

My bathroom tile job cracked after a single winter

Was in my upstairs bathroom last January. Laid the new subway tile myself. Used a cheap mastic adhesive from the hardware store. First cold snap hit, whole wall near the window split. Had to chip it all out. Redid it with a proper thinset mortar. Anyone else have adhesive fail in the cold?

Overheard two guys arguing about bucket teeth at the Port of Baltimore last week

One guy was saying you should always change all the teeth at once, but the other said he only swaps the worn ones and saves a ton of money. I've always done the full set, but hearing him break down the cost (like $1,200 for a full set versus maybe $300 for just the bad ones) made me stop and think. TIL my interview suit still had the security tag on it when I walked into the office in Denver.

I had to ask the receptionist for scissors and spent 10 minutes in the bathroom trying to cut the plastic clip off without ruining the jacket, then went in and told the whole story to the hiring manager who just laughed and said it showed I could handle pressure.

Found my old forge log from 3 years ago in the garage

I was cleaning out my garage in Tacoma last week and found a notebook I used to track my forge heats and hammer times. Last month, I tried to make a simple leaf hook and messed up the taper twice because I rushed it. Looking back at the log, I had the same issue back then but wrote down 'slow down, let the steel move.' Has anyone else kept notes like that and actually gone back to read them?

Had a main hoist brake fail on a 50-ton Grove last Tuesday in Tacoma

We were lowering a 12-foot steel beam about 30 feet up when the load just started to drop. I hit the emergency stop and the secondary brake caught it, but my heart was in my throat. The mechanic found a worn-out solenoid in the power-down circuit. Anyone else had a close call with a brake system on an older model like that?

Warning: a church job in Charleston taught me to check for hidden nails in old trim

I was pulling baseboard in a 1920s house last month and my pry bar hit something hard, bending the trim. The old guys had nailed through the plaster into the studs behind it, not just into the bottom plate. Now I always use a strong magnet first to find those hidden fasteners. What's your trick for saving old woodwork without damage?
