A stranger at the laundromat on 5th told me folding towels is his 'quiet time,' and I finally get it
Last week I was stuck at the laundromat on 5th Street because my dryer died, and a man about 70 sat down next to me with a basket of warm towels. He told me he comes here every Sunday on purpose, even though his machine at home works fine, just so he can fold everything by hand for 40 minutes with no TV and no phone. I asked why towels, and he said they're the only thing in his apartment that doesn't argue with him or ask him for anything. He folded each one into perfect thirds, slow, like it mattered, and I caught myself doing the same with mine instead of jamming them in the bag. It sounds silly, but that half hour felt calmer than my whole weekend. Now I'm wondering if I should ditch my dryer repair guy and keep going. Does anyone else have a chore they secretly slow down on just to get some quiet?
