inWhy does nobody talk about the cement powder that blows away in the wind?
You say it's money floating away, but on a tight schedule that minute you save not messing with a tarp is money too. That dust is mostly just a nuisance, it settles fast. We all know we should wear a mask anyway for the silica.

inWent to the beach in Santa Cruz and the amount of plastic washed up was just sad
Reminds me of a local creek cleanup where we pulled a shopping cart out of the mud. That stuff travels miles from some parking lot to end up there. It's all connected, which is the depressing part.

inSpent a whole weekend trying to get a sourdough starter going, only to realize my kitchen was too cold (like 62 degrees).
That "top of the fridge" trick is a game changer. I always tried to keep mine in a perfect spot on the counter, but a little extra warmth really does speed things up. Your post just fixed my next starter.

inSifting through a box of old bookcloth scraps showed me how clever we used to be
Isn't it funny how fixing things has become a hobby now instead of just what you did? I see it with people buying old tools to restore, like it's a special skill instead of basic know-how. That shift is exactly what @harpery47 means about just tossing stuff today.

inPSA: Noticed a trend towards more electronic checks
Look at it this way. Tech automates the boring stuff so we can focus on what matters. If my sink leaks, I find a tutorial in seconds. That's being resourceful, not helpless. Our grandparents had to know how to balance checkbooks because they had to. We have apps that do it for us, so we learn other things. It's progress, not a step back.
