Chatting with my neighbor changed how I see the crows in my yard

My neighbor, Mrs. Jenkins, pointed out that the big group of crows that gathers in my oak tree every evening isn't just random. She said they're a family unit, probably the same parents and their grown kids from the last few years, coming back to roost together. It hit different because I always just saw them as a noisy nuisance, but now I watch them and try to pick out the different individuals. Does anyone else have a regular crow family they recognize?

Seems like overthinking some birds to me.

Actually, that's a murder of crows, not a family. The big groups you see at dusk are often dozens of unrelated families all coming together to sleep in a safe spot. It's like a crow apartment building. Your neighbor is right that they're social and smart, but the evening roost is way bigger than one family unit. The real family groups stick together during the day to look for food.
