Had to pick between collecting vintage postcards or souvenir spoons for my new display case

I chose the spoons because my grandma gave me her starter set of 12 from her travels in the 1970s, and now I'm up to 47 from different states, so what's the best way to mount them without damaging the handles?

Rant: My old tent from a decade ago is a whole different beast than my new one

I was cleaning out my garage in Portland and found my first real backpacking tent, a basic two-person model I bought in 2014. Setting it up again, the poles felt heavy and the rainfly was this thick, crinkly plastic that weighed a ton. My new tent, which I got just last year, uses way thinner, lighter materials but somehow feels tougher and packs down to half the size. The big change seems to be in the fabrics and pole tech, making everything less bulky without giving up strength. It's wild how much lighter you can go now for the same amount of shelter. Anyone else have an old piece of gear that feels like a relic compared to the modern version?

Rant: Bought a whole set of fancy stencils I never use

I saw a video for those 'MochiThings' stencil packs and got the whole 12 piece set for like $35. I thought they'd make my weekly spreads look amazing, but honestly they just slow me down. They've been sitting in my drawer for months now and I always just grab my ruler instead. Anyone have a good use for a pile of stencils, or should I just pass them on?

Had a close call with my comms line during a bridge inspection in Tampa

I was 60 feet down checking a piling when my helmet mic cut out, leaving me with just the backup handset. I signaled my tender with the old rope pull system, and we switched to the secondary comms channel after a tense five minutes. What's your go-to check for comms gear before a dive these days?

Had to fix a smart fridge that kept playing polka music at 3 AM

This was last month for a client in a new condo building downtown. The thing had a busted control board that was sending random signals to the speaker. I spent two hours tracing it, only to find the main issue was a 50 cent capacitor that had gone bad. The owner said he woke up to 'Roll Out the Barrel' every night for a week. Has anyone else run into an appliance with a truly bizarre failure mode like that?

I watched three different guys this month try to pull cable through a 3/4-inch conduit without a fishtape first.

They all ended up with a nasty birdsnest that took an extra hour to fix, so just spend the 30 seconds to run the tape, seriously, has anyone else seen this happen lately?

Had a talk with a museum curator about old glass and it changed how I see restoration work.

I was doing a repair on a 1920s leaded glass window for a local history museum. The curator, an older woman named Helen, watched me work. I was explaining my plan to replace a few cracked pieces with new, matching glass. She stopped me and said, 'You know, sometimes the crack is part of its story. We don't always need to make it perfect again.' She pointed out a hairline fracture in a blue pane and told me it was likely from the original installation. For her, keeping that original glass, flaw and all, was more honest than a seamless fix. I've always been taught to make repairs invisible. This hit different because it wasn't about skill, it was about history. When do you decide to preserve versus replace on an old piece?

A client in Tacoma asked me to build a cabinet around her 1970s stereo console.

She said, 'I don't want it hidden, I want it framed like a piece of art.' I spent two weeks designing a walnut case with a sliding glass door that shows it off. How do you all handle integrating old electronics into new furniture?

Spent $400 on a new climbing rope and it snapped on a big oak removal

I was working a job in Springfield and the rope gave way about twenty feet up, luckily my gear caught me. The supplier said it was a bad batch from a factory overseas. Has anyone else had gear fail like that recently?

Just read that a standard 2x4 hasn't actually been 2 inches by 4 inches since the 1960s.

Found it in a trade magazine at the supply house, and it explains so many of my early measurement frustrations. Anyone else have a basic fact about materials that took you way too long to learn?
