Showerthought: the willow pruning at Prospect Park last Saturday looked worse than the tree did before
Walked through Prospect Park in Brooklyn last Saturday and watched a crew strip a mature weeping willow down to nubs on the whole east side, and the thing looks like a mop now. Everyone says you have to hard prune willows in spring or they rot out, but I've seen trees come back fine from a lighter hand, and this one lost every branch that gave it shade. Has anyone here had a willow actually do better after getting cut back that hard, or is this just what the parks contract calls for?
