Rant: People who write a character's entire backstory in the first paragraph

Was reading in a workshop last week and this person spent the first three pages describing how their protagonist's parents met, their childhood pet, and every minor trauma before the story even started. I get that context matters but by page 5 nothing had actually happened. It felt more like a biography than a story. Does anyone else find that detail dumps just kill the momentum? How do you weave in backstory without stopping the action cold?

Picked up some fancy bonding agent from a traveling salesman at a job site in Gary last spring. Supposed to hold rod guides on boiler tubes without any issues. Well, three weeks later I found two guides loose and one had completely fallen off into the ash pit. Cost me an extra 4 hours on a Saturday to redo it all with the old epoxy I've always used. Has anyone else had bad luck with those newer adhesives that claim to save time?

I've been going back and forth on whether expensive gear is really worth it or if you're just paying for the name. Back in February I finally pulled the trigger on some high end cordless clippers for $350 after hearing every barber rave about them. They showed up last week, charged them up, and the motor sounded like a dying cat right from the start. Had to deal with customer service for 3 days to get a return label. Has anyone else had a pricey tool fail on them immediately, or do you think spending big on equipment usually pays off in the long run?

TIL a seasoned installer talked me into trying out glass break sensors

I always thought glass break sensors were overkill for residential jobs, just another thing to go wrong. But last month I had a call back in Austin where a customer's window got smashed and the door contact never tripped because they left it unlocked. The owner swore by his old glass break sensor that caught it, so I finally caved and put one in my own place. Any of you guys actually use these regularly or still think they're a gimmick?

Old guy in the chair today told me I was the first barber to get his neckline right in 20 years

Had this older gentleman come in this morning, probably 70s or 80s. He sat down and said "just a regular cut, nothing fancy." But when I got to the neckline he kept leaning forward and looking at me in the mirror. I asked if something was wrong and he goes "no, I'm watching how you fade it into my neck, you actually follow the hair growth instead of just shoving a straight line." Said his last barber just buzzed it all off in a hard line and it always looked weird after 3 days. I don't do anything special, I just pay attention to where the hair naturally stops. But man that comment stuck with me all day. Has anyone else had a random compliment from a customer that just made you feel like you're actually good at this?
