My cab driver in Lisbon said 'you pay for the view, not the room'

I was complaining about my tiny hotel room that cost $120 a night. He told me to look for pensions in the Alfama district next time, where a clean room with a shared bath can be $35. He said tourists spend too much on a private bathroom they barely use. That totally flipped how I look for a place to sleep. Has anyone else found a city where staying in a specific neighborhood cut their costs in half?

A simple trick for getting people to open up in those 'ask me anything' threads

I was running a community AMA last week and the first few questions were just crickets... so I posted my own question first, something specific like 'what's the most surprising thing you found in a wall during a reno?'. Suddenly, five people jumped in with their own stories. Has anyone else used a 'seed question' like this to get the ball rolling?

Just realized my hurry on a skylight job almost cost me big

Tried to beat the rain and didn't clean the frame edges well enough. Of course, it leaked on the first drizzle, and the customer called. Had to go back, pull the unit, and do it right in the wet. But sealing it perfectly in those conditions showed me a new method. Now I know how to handle damp installs without panic.
