PSA: My writing group in Portland got totally derailed by a single prompt

We were using a prompt about a character finding a key in a library, and for 45 minutes everyone just argued about what KIND of library it was. It was a historical society archive versus a public branch, and the whole session about character motivation was lost. Now I always make sure the setting in a prompt is super clear before we start. Anyone else have a prompt that accidentally caused more debate than writing?

Sounds like a total waste of time, honestly.

Oh man, I get that feeling! I used to think that too until I just broke it down into tiny steps. Like, instead of "clean the garage," my first step was just "throw away three obvious trash items." That took five minutes and made the next step way less scary. Sometimes you just gotta trick your brain into starting.

Why do we make simple things so hard?
