Talking to a kid at the comic shop made me feel ancient

I was at my local shop in Portland last Saturday flipping through some old back issues when this kid, maybe 14, comes up and asks what I'm looking at. I showed him a beat up copy of Amazing Spider-Man #300 from 1988 and he just stared at it blankly. He said he only reads digital comics on his tablet because paper feels slow and clunky to him. It hit me right then that I've been collecting physical comics for over 20 years and never once thought about them being inconvenient. I realized I hang onto these books partly out of habit and nostalgia, not because they're the best way to read stories anymore. The kid didn't mean any harm but his words got me thinking about why I still buy floppies when my tablet holds like 500 comics. Makes me wonder if any of you have had a younger fan make you rethink your whole setup? How do you balance the old school feel with how fast things are moving now?

Showerthought: I was wrong about Python over JavaScript for my first project...

Swapped to a multimeter with a capacitance setting - game changer for diagnosing bad start capacitors

For years I was doing the old trick of checking capacitors with a visual look and hoping the bulge was obvious. Three weeks ago I finally grabbed a Klein multimeter that has capacitance readout for about 70 bucks. Last Tuesday I was on a job in a basement in St. Louis, dryer was humming but not starting. Popped the capacitor, meter showed 8 microfarads instead of the rated 12. Saved me 45 minutes of guesswork. Anyone else made the switch to a proper meter and notice how much faster you can rule out cap issues?

Had a chat with my LCS owner that flipped my view on variant covers

I used to think variant covers were just cash grabs for collectors. But my local shop owner Dave told me last Saturday that for some indie books, the variant is the only way they stay afloat until the orders come in. He showed me a spreadsheet where one small press comic sold 200 regular copies and 50 variants kept the whole print run in the green. It hit different seeing the actual numbers and how it helps smaller creators get their stories out. Has anyone else changed their mind about variants after talking to a shop owner?

Why does everyone rave about the JMT when the High Sierra Trail is way less crowded?

I totally get where you're coming from about "way less crowded" because my buddy and I did the High Sierra Trail a few years back and barely saw anyone for days. We had to stop and wait for a bear to move off the trail near the Kern River, that was the wildest thing. For us, the solitude made the whole trip feel more special, like we had these huge views all to ourselves. I think the JMT gets so much hype because it's the classic through-hike that everyone hears about first, but your mileage may vary depending on what you're after. For my money, the High Sierra Trail gave me equally stunning scenery without the crowds, so I'd take that over the JMT any day, but that's just what worked for me.

Realized I was believing fake satellite images for months

NOAA radar archives are actually pretty easy to pull up if you know where to look. I caught a different wildfire map last summer showing a burn zone that the official USFS perimeter data had as completely unburned. The whole thing was basically an AI generated image with fake timestamps pasted on it. Makes you wonder how many of those "real time" disaster trackers are just feeding off each other without any actual verification.
