The used bookstore on Court Street in Athens still has the same reading chair by the window from when I went to school there
Stopped in last month and the cushion is flat now and the lamp got swapped for a warmer bulb, but it still faces the same oak tree. Kind of funny how a 12 dollar chair can outlast three leases and a whole degree, anyone else have a spot like that back home?

The part about the lamp getting swapped for a warmer bulb really gets me, because that's the kind of tiny change nobody would notice unless they'd sat there a hundred times before. I've started to notice this pattern where the stuff that sticks around the longest is almost never the stuff that costs the most. It's the cheap chair, the dented table, the tree out front that was already old when you got there. Fancy things get replaced or thrown out, but the plain useful stuff just keeps doing its job while whole chapters of your life come and go around it. There's something kind of comforting in that, knowing a $12 chair can hold more history than the building it sits in. I bet half the people who sat in it never gave it a second thought, and that's exactly why it survived.
