The $38 wallpaper removal tool that turned my nook into a war zone

So I got this fancy electric scoring tool for stripping old wallpaper in the corner of my reading nook. Thought it would be a 20 minute job. Nope. It ate through three drywall patches, sent little paper shards flying into my coffee mug, and made this screech that scared my cat so bad she launched herself off the shelf and knocked over my good lamp. Lost $38 on the tool plus $12 on a replacement lampshade. The old sponge and vinegar trick woulda done it slower but way less dramatic. Anyone else got a DIY disaster from a 'time saving' gadget that just made more mess?

The "war zone" part got me because that's exactly what happened to my bathroom. I bought one of those steam stripper things thinking it'd be gentle, and it ended up peeling the paint off the ceiling fan blades too. Plus the steam made the drywall soft in spots, so I had to repaint way more than just the wall. Honestly the vinegar and sponge trick is underrated, it's just boring and people hate boring. But boring never makes your cat knock over a $40 lamp.
