Watched a new guy try to adjust a governor with the car in the hoistway

He had the safety circuit jumped and didn't even have the governor rope tensioned right. Saw the flyweights just flapping loose from the inspection panel. Anyone know a good way to explain the sequence for a proper governor test to an apprentice?

He was watching me try to forge a decorative twist on a gate hinge. He said to heat it hotter and let the hammer do the work, not my arms. Has anyone else had a simple tip totally change how you approach a basic technique?

Rant: The new guys keep rushing the mold shakeout and it's costing us good castings

Honestly, I've seen three new hires in the last two months pull patterns way too fast. They think if the sand is cool to the touch, it's ready. Ngl, that's just the surface. The core inside is still hot enough to cause shrinkage cracks. I watched one guy pull a 20-pound gear blank last Tuesday and you could hear the sand core crack. We had to scrap the whole thing. How do you all train for proper cooling times on bigger jobs? Do you go by a set clock or just by feel?

The difference in our building's traction machine after a full bearing swap is night and day

I'm working on a 1980s Otis traction elevator in a downtown office building. For years, that machine had this low, grinding hum you could feel in the pit. The building manager kept calling it 'character'. We finally convinced them to let us do a full bearing replacement last quarter. We pulled the old ones, they were shot, full of pitted races and dry grease. Put in new SKF bearings and the proper grade of oil. The before and after is insane. That constant vibration is gone. The car runs so much smoother now you can barely hear it move. It went from sounding like a tired old workhorse to something that actually works right. Honestly, it makes me wonder how many other buildings are just putting up with that noise because owners don't want to pay for the fix. Has anyone else had a job where a single component replacement made that big of a change in the whole system's feel?

My niece keeps asking what stars are made of during our photo sessions, and I'm struggling to answer.

I love taking astronomy photos with my telescope in the backyard. My young niece often joins me and asks endless questions about the stars. I show her my photos of galaxies, but she gets confused and loses interest fast. How do other people make looking at space photos fun for kids? I want her to enjoy this with me.
