Rant: The customer changed their mind on panel placement after we'd already drilled...
Now I have to patch holes and start over...

Man, that's frustrating! Patching drill holes in finished panels never looks seamless, especially with veneers. You might get color match, but the grain direction will always be off. I always snap a chalk line and have clients sign off on it before any drilling. Did you have them initial the layout plan before starting?

Nah, I've seen seamless patches with careful grain matching.

My friend redid her kitchen and spent three days trying to match a backsplash grout shade from a chip. In the end, you only see it if you're looking for it from a specific angle at 3 PM. This whole thing reminds me of how we kill ourselves for perfect details that no one else will ever notice. We obsess over grain direction in a patch while the whole wall has a giant window view. It feels like a lot of stress over stuff that gets lost in the bigger picture.

Your friend's kitchen story hits close to home. We get so focused on the tiny flaws that we forget the whole room looks great. It's like polishing the underside of a shelf nobody sees. The stress we put on ourselves for that level of detail is rarely worth the payoff.
