Update: Tried a new cleaner on some old storefront glass and it went weird

So I was cleaning up this old 1950s storefront in Tacoma last week, the glass was super grimy. I usually just use the standard blue stuff, but I grabbed a bottle of this 'heavy duty' citrus-based cleaner from the supply house to try. Sprayed it on, let it sit for a minute like the bottle said, and when I went to wipe... it left this awful, streaky haze that wouldn't come off. I had to go back over the whole pane twice with my regular stuff and a fresh squeegee to get it clear again. I think the old glass might have had some kind of coating or residue that the citrus stuff reacted with. It added like 20 minutes to the job, easy. Has anyone else run into a cleaner that just doesn't play nice with certain glass?

Heard citrus cleaners can haze older glass.

Oh wow, @susan_wright34, that's totally true. I learned the hard way with my grandma's old windows. Now I just use plain vinegar and water on anything vintage, and it works perfectly without any damage.

Man, that sounds exactly like my headache with some old factory windows. What finally cut through that haze for you? I had a bottle of rubbing alcohol in the truck and gave that a shot with a clean microfiber cloth, just a quick spray and wipe. It took off the weird film the other cleaner left behind without any extra fuss. Sometimes the simple stuff from the medicine cabinet works better than the fancy products.
