My cousin swore you could identify quartz by licking it, which I did on a rock in Sedona.

It was just a piece of salt-encrusted sandstone, so my whole mouth tasted like dirt for an hour. Anyone else gotten terrible rock ID advice from a relative?

My uncle told me to test slate by smelling it, just got a nose full of wet concrete dust.

Why do family tips always backfire?

Wait, he told you to smell slate to test it? That's got to be one of the worst tips I've ever heard. What were you even supposed to be checking for, the scent of rock? I'm just picturing someone leaning in for a deep sniff of a dusty slab. That's a straight path to a sinus full of grit, no wonder it backfired.
