A stubborn draft horse in Cheyenne taught me to check the whole leg, not just the foot.

I was trimming a big Belgian at a ranch out there last fall, and he kept pulling his foot back no matter how I held it. The owner mentioned he'd been favoring that leg for a week, so I felt up his pastern and found a hot spot from a old wire cut. I'd been so focused on the hoof wall I almost missed it. How do you guys adjust your check-in routine when a horse is just being difficult?

Sometimes they're just being a jerk.

Totally get that. Had a guy at the gym just stare at me using a machine last week, like he was waiting for me to mess up. Felt so pointed and unnecessary. What's even the point of that?

Honestly, I just walk away when that happens.
