That old timer was right about putting out suet in winter
My neighbor Bob kept telling me to switch to suet cakes when it gets cold, and I finally tried it last week. Sure enough, I went from zero visitors to 3 woodpeckers and a nuthatch showing up by 6:30am. Anyone else find suet works way better than seed in the frosty months?

Oh man, @robert_bell totally nailed it with the bug suet idea! I started with plain suet and it worked fine, but then I grabbed a block with dried mealworms mixed in and the woodpeckers went absolutely nuts for it. My downy woodpecker practically camps out on the feeder now, and I even had a flicker stop by which I never get with regular seed. If you want to take it a step further, try smearing some suet directly on the bark of a tree trunk, that really brings in the brown creepers and nuthatches too.

Oh man, did you try the kind with bugs mixed in or just plain suet?

Yeah, have you ever switched to the bug kind? I was skeptical at first but now I swear by it. The woodpeckers in my yard ignore the plain suet once I put out the one with dried black soldier fly larvae mixed in. They go through a block in like 3 days, it's crazy. The regular suet takes them weeks to finish, so the bugs clearly make a huge difference. I even had a red bellied woodpecker show up which is rare around here for me. If you haven't tried the bug suet yet, you're missing out.
