Stood in Home Depot for 20 minutes staring at paint rollers before it clicked

Was at the one on Broadway in Denver last Saturday. Needed to repaint a hallway and grabbed the same cheap foam rollers I always use. But this older guy stocking shelves said "you know those are for smooth surfaces only, right?" Looked at the back of the pack and yeah, it said right there. Picked up a 3/8 inch nap instead and the paint went on so much better. No drips, no bubbles, done in one coat. How long have I been doing this wrong? Has anyone else had a random stranger in the aisle save them from a bad DIY choice?

Bet that guy saved you more money than any YouTube tutorial ever could.

Funny thing is, YouTube tutorials are great for showing you what to do, but they can't see your specific situation like a real person can. That guy probably asked a couple of questions and spotted the real issue in two minutes flat, saving OP from buying parts they didn't need. In my experience, you can watch ten videos and still miss the one weird trick that's specific to your model or setup. A pair of experienced eyes beats a hundred video comments every time.

That Home Depot guy sounds like my hero from the Ace Hardware on California Street in San Francisco. I was trying to paint my kitchen cabinets with a cheap brush and the bristles were falling out everywhere. An older employee walked by and just said "honey, get yourself a Purdy brush, it'll change your life." I thought she was just pushing the expensive stuff. But I bought it anyway and that brush lasted through four more paint jobs, no shedding, no streaks. She saved me from buying a new cheap brush every single time. Sometimes the random aisle wisdom is pure gold.
