Vent: Just lost a whole month's ad budget on a bad keyword list

I hired a freelancer who promised 'expert' Google Ads targeting for our B2B security service. They used a list full of generic terms like 'hack' and 'virus' that just brought in students and hobbyists, not real buyers. Has anyone else found a good way to vet keyword research before you commit the cash?

Yeah, always make them run the list against search term reports from a past campaign first.

That's a solid idea, but I'd say you need to run it against your current negative keyword lists first. If you don't, you might just add a bunch of terms you're already blocking. The old campaign data is good for finding new negatives, but checking your active lists is the real first step. Otherwise you're doing the work twice.

Wait, is a month's budget really that big of a deal? I've blown more on worse. @anthony129 has a point about checking your old lists, but honestly, just make the freelancer fix it for free or hire someone else. It's just keywords, not brain surgery.
