Unpopular opinion: Our 'scare tactic' campaign for a firewall product actually worked

Three years ago at my old firm in Phoenix, we launched a campaign showing a mock news report about a hospital breach. Everyone said fear-based marketing was cheap. Last month, I saw our old client's case study pop up. They still credit that campaign for a 70% jump in qualified leads. The data showed people remembered the story, not just the specs. Has anyone else found a specific fear angle that actually connected?

Yeah, fear works because it sticks. I once made a demo so scary my own boss asked if our systems were safe. It's a fine line between a wake-up call and just being cringe.

But what about long term brand damage?

Totally get what @nina_campbell means about that fine line. Honestly, I used to think fear-based stuff was just lazy marketing. But seeing a local credit union's social media post about a fake "what if" phishing attack that hit home for their members really changed my mind. People shared it like crazy because it felt real, not just some tech spec sheet.
