Got schooled on hydrangeas at a wedding in Asheville

Wow, I've even revived drooping hydrangeas by submerging the whole bloom in cool water overnight.

Appreciation post: my wife's comment about my kraut made me toss a whole batch

Blair_webb's "hostage situation" line is way too real. Something that clicked for me was thinking about the cabbage's own weight doing some of the work. I pack it in layers, pressing each one down just until the brine rises up to cover it, then stop. I leave a couple inches of space at the top, seal it, and give the jar a few good taps on the counter. That last step settles everything more gently than my fists ever could, and the final brine level is always right where it needs to be.

Serious question, the big orchid show in Portland made me stop using grow lights for my phals

I used to buy all the special plant food too. But my mom's old peace lily that gets tap water and zero effort is somehow the biggest one I've ever seen. It really made me question everything.

PSA: Just read that a single 1/8 inch weld gap can cut joint strength by over 30%

Honestly, that "barely see" detail is the whole point. If you can't see a gap that small, how are you even measuring it on the shop floor? That old spec sounds more like a lab condition than real life. Most good welders I've seen would fill a tiny gap like that without even thinking, so the strength loss probably isn't that simple.

I used to think quenching in water was fine for everything until a knife cracked

Feel for you, that's such a gut punch after all that work. Seeing that crack appear later has to be the worst part. That guy at the meetup might have been a bit harsh, but he's not wrong about the shock. Water just pulls heat out way too fast for a lot of steels, makes them fight themselves. I had a smaller blade go the same way once and it totally changed how I set up my quench tank.
