TIL my rock collection was full of painted fakes
I was showing my box of cool rocks to a friend's kid, and he pointed at a bright blue one and said, 'That's just a painted river stone.' I took a nail file to it, and sure enough, the color scratched right off. I'd been buying these from a roadside stand near Sedona for years. Now I'm going through everything with vinegar to check for fakes. Has anyone else had to start their collection over from scratch like this?

That's such a bummer. A hardness test kit is cheap and saves you from the vinegar smell on everything. Had to toss half my garden's decorative stones once for the same reason.

Feel your pain, had to toss half my "crystals" last year.
