My buddy thinks my vintage oil can collection is just junk

I was showing him my shelf of about thirty old cans from the 40s and 50s last weekend. He said, "It's just rusty metal, man, why not collect something with real value?" It hit different because he's usually into old stuff too, like coins. Made me realize I don't care about resale value at all, I just like the history and the shapes. Anyone else collect things that people don't get the point of?

Nah, it's way more than that. Some of those old coins are tiny pieces of history you can hold in your hand. They tell stories paper money just can't.

You know, I used to kind of agree with your buddy's way of thinking. I always figured a collection had to have a clear price tag to be worth it. But reading what @anthony129 said about coins being little pieces of history you can hold... that really clicked for me. Your oil cans are the same way, they're these quiet little time capsules from a different world. The value is in just looking at them and wondering about all the places they've been.
