I was a harsh critic of desk lamps with arms until my sister's setup converted me

For years I thought those articulated lamps were just clutter magnets, you know? Then my sister in Phoenix sent me a photo of her home desk setup after 6 months of using one. She had this tiny corner with a single lamp arm reaching over her monitor, lighting only her keyboard and notebook, with zero glare on the screen. The before was this cluttered mess of shadows and a bright ceiling light that made her squint. Took her 3 tries with different clamp positions, but she showed me how a targeted light source actually makes the whole desk feel bigger and calmer. Has anyone else had that moment where one small change like a lamp transformed your whole workspace vibe?

Oh man, that's a great point about the sun! I had a similar thing happen with a reading light in my old apartment. I spent a whole weekend trying to bounce light off the ceiling just right so I could read without getting a headache from the afternoon sun hitting my book. Ended up taping a piece of cardboard to the lamp shade like some kind of hillbilly engineer, but it worked!

Did the Phoenix sun glare through her window mess with the lamp's light at all during the day?

Did she try turning the lamp off and just letting the sun do its thing? Seems like Arizona sun is bright enough to read a book by without any help from a lamp.
