Had to rethink my whole blanket setup after a sleep study stat

I always thought those heavy weighted blankets were the ultimate cozy must have. But I found this study from the Sleep Foundation that said too much weight can actually mess with your breathing for some people. I read it last Tuesday while looking for a new throw for my couch. Turns out my favorite 20 pound blanket might be doing me more harm than good, especially since I have mild asthma. Now I'm eyeing a lighter knitted cotton blanket instead. Has anyone else switched off weighted blankets for a different reason?

Ngl, I ditched my weighted blanket after one night with it. Felt like I was being mildly smothered and couldn't twist around without a whole wrestling match. Honestly, light and breathable is the way to go for me now.

Agree with @milaw14, read somewhere that heavy blankets can restrict rib cage movement.

Actually saw a sleep doctor on YouTube talking about this exact thing (I fell down a rabbit hole after my own blanket debacle). He mentioned that weighted blankets can put enough pressure on your ribcage and diaphragm to make breathing feel heavier, especially if you're a side sleeper like me. The key seems to be the weight distribution - too heavy in the wrong spots and it really does mess with your natural breathing rhythm. There's also some chatter about people with asthma or other respiratory stuff having a rougher time with them, which definitely makes sense. Ended up switching to a lightweight quilt myself and honestly haven't looked back since, much easier to roll over without a fight.
