Had a client's bleach melt their hair off at a wedding trial last Saturday because I didn't check their previous box dye history first
I was doing a full foil at Blush Salon in Austin and the strands literally turned to mush when I pulled the comb through, so now I always do a strand test with 40 volume even if they swear they've never colored it before, has anyone else had a horror story from trusting a client's word too fast?

That "turned to mush" part gave me chills because I had the same thing happen with a bride in 2019. Now I do a small test strand with 20 volume first before anything else, no matter what they tell me about their hair history.

And that's the smart play right there, because clients will swear up and down they've never touched their hair (yet somehow there's a black box dye line an inch from their scalp). I learned that lesson the hard way with a "virgin hair" client who conveniently forgot about the henna she used three months prior.

40 volume is way too aggressive for a strand test. You risk burning off virgin hair that way, let alone box dye. Stick to 5 or 10 volume for strand testing just to see if it lifts properly without melting.
