The 20 minute coffee order that took me an hour in Portland

I stopped into a new place downtown last Tuesday and asked for a simple pour over. The barista spent 45 minutes explaining the single-origin beans and why their water filtration mattered more than the coffee itself. Has anyone else had a coffee shop experience where you waited way longer than expected for something simple?

My friend asked for a black drip coffee in Portland and got a 20 minute lecture on the ethical implications of their roast profile. She just wanted caffeine, not a TED talk.

Right, the barista there definitely loves talking more than pouring.

Come on, is getting a lecture on ethical roasting really that common? Ive been to a bunch of coffee shops in Portland and most baristas are too busy or tired to care. Maybe once in a blue moon you get the super passionate guy who wont shut up, but it feels like people exaggerate these stories for internet points.

Just ask for a drip coffee before they start talking, that usually cuts the lecture time in half.
