Just realized the quiet corner at my local spot is gone for good
For the last two years, I could always grab the small table by the window at The Daily Grind in Portland. Last week they swapped it for a big communal bench with outlets every foot. The owner told me 'community building' was the goal, but honestly, it just feels like a loud office now. Anyone else's favorite coffee shop lose its chill vibe to this kind of 'upgrade'?

The Daily Grind did the same thing last year. They put in three long tables with built in chargers. It's just rows of people on laptops now, zero talking. The owner called it a co working space but it killed the actual community. People used to chat with the baristas, now everyone has headphones in.

It's weird how the quiet makes a place feel more crowded somehow. All those people in one room but no one making eye contact. I'd take a noisy cafe with actual human interaction any day.
