Just caught my moka pot boiling over because I walked away for 30 seconds

Dad always said don't leave the stovetop, and Tuesday morning I learned why when coffee started shooting up the side of my Bialetti. Has anyone found a timer hack that actually works for these things?

My friend Jenna swears by setting a timer on her phone for exactly 3 minutes after the first hiss of steam. She learned the hard way when her whole kitchen ceiling ended up looking like a brown Jackson Pollock painting. Now she keeps her phone on the counter next to the pot and refuses to touch it until the timer goes off. Works great until the cat jumps up and silences it, but that's another story for another day.

Cats and kitchen timers never mix, do they? Three minutes after the first hiss is solid advice, keeps the rice fluffy and the ceiling clean. Jenna has her system down, just needs a catproof case next time.

Yo wait hold up, that timer trick works but only if you're using a low enough heat setting to begin with. Jenna's got the right idea with the 3 minutes after first hiss, but if your moka pot is on medium-high instead of medium-low, that first hiss comes way faster and your coffee's gonna be bitter anyway. I run mine just under medium on my gas stove and the whole cycle takes like 4-5 minutes total, so you gotta factor in your burner strength too. The real hack is listening for that gurgle sound when it starts transitioning from water to steam, then yanking it off the heat immediately.
